An involvement exercise giving people a chance to have their say on maternity services in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent is to be extended.

This includes holding a second online event and making the online survey available for longer.

An initial event, on Microsoft Teams, was held during the morning of Friday July 16. The new event will take place from 7pm until 8.30pm on Thursday August 12.

Heather Johnstone, Together We’re Better Maternity Transformation Programme Director, said: “We want as many people as possible to be able to participate in this involvement work. The first online event went well and gave us some really useful insight. But we’re aware not everyone can make a daytime event for work or other reasons. So, we have decided to hold our second event in the evening.”

Some maternity services were temporarily suspended at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. This included the Midwife-led Birth Units for low-risk births at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital in Lichfield and County Hospital in Stafford.

Heather said: “We are now looking at ways to reinstate services, but to do it in a way that makes best use of the workforce and takes into account the experiences people have had in recent years.

“We are considering an on-demand proposal that means the Midwife-led Birth Units would be available 24/7, but not staffed permanently as before. Midwives would attend the unit when a birth is expected.

“We also want mothers to have a closer relationship with midwives or a midwifery team, as we know this continuity of carer brings real benefits.

“We don’t just want to hear from people who have recently given birth, we want to hear from anyone who has experience of the maternity services – including partners, staff, and those providing support for maternity service users.

“We also want to hear about experiences relating to childbirth and antenatal services.”

You can register for the online event here anytime until midnight on 9 July 2021.

The online maternity services survey will now remain open until midnight on 15 August 2021. If you need any support to complete the survey, call 0333 150 2155 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
